Humpty Dumpty sketches

Here are the sketches for the Humpty Dumpty book. It is very simple- cover, and 5 double page spreads inside. 7 inches tall by 14 inches wide when open. Bear in mind that these are sketches- and 80% of the book is going to be color, pattern and texture. These sketches just serve as compositions, and to show character gestures and expressions. That said, My editor loved them, and there are only a few minor changes to be made. I will post the finishes when they are done. But first I have to do the sketches for the other 2 books.

My editor wanted me to flop the images so that Humpty is on the right- that way the last image with the duck is on the very last page. I think that is a very good idea. She also wants me to make the eyes more crescent shaped on all the characters, like Humpty. And to zoom out of the "All the kings horses" image a bit so that you can see the top of the wall. Then I can add some critters in there- birds or something. I like that idea as well. I'm still not sure about showing the chick's feet on humpty yet- or giving him slippers, and having the duck be a surprise. I'll leave that up to the editors.

I just heard back from Workman Publishing about my book. Unfortunately they can't publish it because they just did a book on animal sounds. But, they offered me a 3 book deal instead- even better. I can still shop my book around to other places. That is wonderful. I'm so happy!

I received word from The Land of Nod that they are very interested in selling prints of "Pierre Fait du Camping". That is awesome! I LOVE The Land of Nod! I should know as early as next week if they will be using my Pierre Prints in 2010

I have several paintings in the works right now. Two are closer to having the sketches resolved, and the other is more of an idea to expand on the Pierre painting. I'll have a lot more time for art when school starts again. I love playing with my son all day, but it slows down my creative time a lot. I'll post the sketch for my next painting when it is done. :D

"Pierre Fait du Camping"

Here is the finished painting, "Pierre Fait du Camping".
Check out the prints on etsy.
I have a smaller cropped version of the painting also, which is 7 x 11 inches. That version does not include the camper or the car. I am talking with the Land of Nod about making prints of this painting for their spring catalogue. It looks good so far.

Piere Fait du Camping

I've been exploring vintage toys lately. I have had some awesome old wooden hand-me-down toys from my mom, that came from my grandparents. I KNOW they'll make some appearances in my work soon. I've already been looking at some old clothes pin people that I found in a toy chest. They are GREAT! Thanks to my mom for painting the little wood pegs to look like people when I was a baby. I can't wait to get out the paints for this one. Oh, why the French title? I just love vintage French signs, so rather than putting one in the art, I figured I would just title it that way.

Here are a few samples from my portfolio. I love working in acrylic paints on textured surfaces. I try to use colors that are a little retro in appearance, and I love squeezing in patterns or linework too.

Please visit myEtsy shop to see more prints from my promotional portfolio. And check out my concept portfolio at SIS.com

I am currently working on some children's books that I have written. I recently finished my first board book "Pup Says Ruff", which I have submitted to several publishers. The art for this book can be found on ETSY as well. I am always available for freelance illustration work. I love the challenge of devising a creative visual solution to any problem.

Thank you.
